Located on the
Wörthensee Lake, the vibrant university city of Klagenfurt is
the capital of the Austrian Federal State of Carinthia. It has a
lively arts and culture scene with theatre, cabaret and music,
cultural associations and galleries. History addicts can explore
800 years of Klagenfurt’s past on a walk through the old-town
quarter and enjoy marvellous views from the 17th-century parish
church tower. A vast variety of attractive events are also held
in the city throughout the year, including folk festivals, major
cultural events and sporting events such as the Carinthia
Ironman Austria and Carinthia Runs. Those more interested in
shopping will find everything from fine fashion and souvenir
boutiques to traditional Carinthian specialities. And talking of
specialities; Klagenfurt is chock-full of culinary delights,
Gselchtes, Kasnudeln, Ritschert and Saure Suppe to name but a
few. Many of the recipes for these traditional dishes have been
handed down for generations and are still a closely guarded
secret. Klagenfurt cuisine – well worth discovering.
