The Galitzenklamm Gorge
near Lienz in Austria, was a magnet for sightseers from near and
far as early as the 19th century and this jewel of nature
reopened to the public in 2002. Visitors can admire the raging
waterfalls and elemental forces of the Galitzenbach River from a
wooden walkway installed along the rock walls. Nature lovers are
also treated to awe-inspiring views of the Lienzer Dolomites
from impressive rock bridges. Numerous panels along the way
provide information on plants and birdlife as well as an insight
into the history of the gorge. Since 2004, a stone ball-mill
demonstrates how the force of water can mill stones of various
sizes into a polished round shape. The gorge makes an ideal day
out for families although it is not suitable for baby buggies.
